Dr. John Abel is the director/owner of Harper Animal Hospital. Dr. Abel is a 1988 graduate of the Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine and has been working at Harper Animal Hospital since 1989. In addition to his DVM degree, Dr. Abel also holds a bachelors degree in microbiology from Iowa State University. Dr. Abel's interest in veterinary medicine dates back to an early age when he traveled from farm to farm with his father who ran a mixed animal practice in rural Iowa. These days, when not at the animal hospital, you are likely to see Dr. Abel and his wife watching or coaching one of their four children on the ball fields or courts of the Northwest suburbs.
Dr. Abel is an active member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, the American Animal Hospital Association, the Chicago Veterinary Medical Association, and the Illinois State Veterinary Medical Association.
Dr. Kate Player is a graduate of University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine and has been working at Harper Animal Hospital since June of 2011. Dr. Player also received her Bachelor of Science from University of Illinois in Urbana with a major in Animal Sciences. Dr. Player has always wanted to be a veterinarian because of her love of animals and passion for medicine and surgery. Because of her early knowledge of her career path, she was able to live or work with a wide variety of animals including dogs, cats, chinchillas, guinea pigs, rabbits, birds, horses, cattle, sheep, pigs, buffalo, zebras, and many more. Dr. Player loves all aspects of veterinary medicine; however she has special interest in surgery, reproduction, nutrition, ophthamology, behavior, and oncology.
Dr. Player raises, breeds and show Rottweilers. She also rides, drives, and competes with her American Quarter Horse. She shares her life with four wonderful Rottweilers (Baxter, Bear, Bruno, Bella), a Black Lab mix (Riley), a cat (Pixel), and a horse (Rio). When not in the clinic, you can find her at the barn with Rio or working one of the dogs.
Dr. Player is an active member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, American Animal Hospital Association, Illinois State Veterinary Medical Association, as well as the American Rottweiler Club, the Medallion Rottweiler Club, and the American Quarter Horse Association.
